If you’re looking for some fun by the beach that won’t leave your wallet wailing, these five free Sunshine State events have your name on them.
This high-flying celebration, which runs July 4-10, 2011, kicks off with a fireworks extravaganza. It includes Bands on the Beach and the Pensacola Beach Air Show, where you will be thrilled by the Navy’s flight demonstration team — the legendary Blue Angels — performing exhilarating stunts and heart-stopping maneuvers over the Gulf of Mexico.
Don’t miss the Hollywood Beach Theatre’s Free Concerts and Dancing Under the Stars Series! These ocean-side performances are offered year round — weather permitting — and there’s one nearly every day. Afterward, enjoy waterfront dining along the oceanfront Broadwalk or Intracoastal Waterway.
Sanibel Island is to shelling as Flipper is to dolphins: legendary. So, it’s only fitting that the island is home to the famed Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum. Splash over to one of its Shelling 101 workshops — offered free with paid admission to the museum every Monday and Tuesday — to get the scoop on all things shelling. Learn about the sweetest spots for shelling, the time of day that’s best for collecting shells and more. The museum also offers Walk the Beach with the Experts the last Tuesday of each month.
Mother Nature provides the stunning backdrop for Sunsets at Pier 60, the free, family-friendly sunset celebrations that occur nightly — weather permitting — at Pier 60 Park in Clearwater Beach. The area is renowned for its white-sand beaches, tranquil waters, abundant water sports, shopping and restaurants. The celebrations feature craftsmen, musical entertainment, artisans and such street performers as fire-breathers and magicians.
What do you get when you combine the cool Atlantic breezes, sounds of the surf and classic movies? A recipe for a romantic date or a fun family evening out. The Moonlight Movies Series offers up this cool concoction at the Sea Walk Pavilion on selected Fridays in May and June.
