That kind of loses it's significance here in north Florida because we have been having spring weather since the fall weather stopped in December. But we celebrate Groundhog Day just the same. How accurate is the groundhog in predicting weather? The Canadian (they know winter) Encyclopedia notes that a study of weather data places the beasts’ accuracy north of the border at just under 40%. Note that 33% accuracy can occur by chance. Punxsutawney Phil will give his prediction in a couple of hours and you'll know, with reasonable doubt, if you can start planting your gardens.
