Capt. Rob Modys of SoulMate Charters said the focus over the past week was on tarpon. They are schooled up in the Gulf near ...Sanibel Island and are feeding on a lot of different baits... when they feed. Seems you can be surrounded by the silver kings and they’ll hit nary a bait. But when they do, it’s fishing at it’s best. There’s nothing quite like a 100 plus pound fish, that likes to jump, on the end of the line. Live threadfin herrings, cut catfish, pinfish, crabs and even shiners are catching them, but mixing up the offerings is a must. The nearshore reefs are producing a ton of spanish mackerel along with keeper sized trout, snapper and a few flounder. Live shrimp on jigs moved slowly across the bottom is the ticket. The redfish are biting along the mangrove shorelines in the back of Estero Bay on the highest part of the tide. They are starting to head for the shaded areas to get out of the hot sun. If you want them you’re going to have to cast the shrimp, cut ladyfish or cut threadfin well up under the overhang for success.
