Central East Florida Overview
Long a haven for bikers and spring breakers, the Central East region has reinvented itself as a family destination with kid-friendly attractions, beaches and restaurants, as well as upscale resorts, boutiques and spas for adults.

Portals to the Past
Some are pyramid shaped and many were ceremonial. While most of the stories and rituals have been lost to time, there is enough left for us to literally step back 1,000 years.

Mural, Mural on the Wall
A man listens to an old record player. A woman looks out the window as a dove flies by. For me, seeing daily life through the windows makes it seem like I am really there. And it is a lovely slice of life.

Big, Bad Bass
Anglers who fish the Suwannee fall in love with its cypress swamps and spring-fed creeks. From its headwaters in "The Swamp" to the wide flood plain near its mouth, the Suwannee's scenery seems to evolve every 30 miles.

Houseboating on Nature's Doorstep
The lower portion of the Suwannee is a nature preserve, so we saw very little development or housing. Just our drifting boat along the winding river, and not a billboard or electrical wire for miles.

Winter Park, Mount Dora and DeLand
In typical New England fashion, the opulent residences of Winter Park are often secluded and hidden from public view. However, a scenic boat tour offers views of various mansions from the lakes and canals of the gracious and historic city of Winter Park.

Skydiving in DeLand
We were the only tandem jumpers, which meant we exited last, after watching everyone else tumble out of the plane at 13,500 feet. Gulp.

Quiet Lake Helen
People have been riding horseback here since before the town's founding in 1888. Partly it's a way to get around, same as walking or riding a bicycle. Partly it's to get to the equestrian park which, along with a multi-acre recreation area, occupies four square blocks in the middle of town.
